On this date, March 15, in the year 1999; Maurice Ashley, a Jamaican immigrant, became the first Black chess player to earn the highest designated ranking made by the World Chess Federation, of International Grand Master.
This designation is only handed out to a limited number of players worldwide based on their aptitude. Once this title is given, it is held for life.
